Less than a month to go until the VELA Cup in Chiavari, the starting regatta of the national circuit organized by the historic Italian monthly boating magazine Il Giornale della Vela.
From Chiavari, one of Liguria's best-loved seaside villages, located right in the center of the magnificent Tigullio Gulf and a stone's throw from magical Portofino, we set sail for a weekend of fun at sea and on land. Already more than 40 boats have registered.
Everything is (almost) ready for the start of the first VELA Cup of 2025, the one staged in the Gulf of Tigullio, in Liguria, and which is the leg that will also inaugurate in 2025 the most attended regatta circuit in Italy, organized by the Giornale della Vela. Thus, what has now become the great "spring boating classic," takes place this year within a special weekend, the one from Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4: an unmissable opportunity to plan the first boating vacation of the year by taking advantage of the May 1 bridge.
Not for nothing are in fact already more than forty boats registered for the VELA Cup in Chiavari starting on Saturday morning, May 3, a record; which will therefore bring at least more than three hundred enthusiasts (but registration is still open...) to the dock to animate the Ligurian leg that opens the (beautiful) season. Then there is a fun and spectacular 12-nautical-mile course to do at sea: starting in front of the Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest, then buoys at Lavagna, off Chiavari and Portofino, and finally back to the start/finish line. The regatta takes about 4 hours.
And just the Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest becomes the home of the VELA Cup for three days, a true celebration of sailing with the regatta (of course) at its center on Saturday, May 3. The Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest hosts boats from outside the area free of charge for Saturday night.
PROGRAM
Friday, May 2.
From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the VELA Cup Point, delivery of gift bags, numbers and instructions.
Saturday, May 3.
9:30 a.m.: Crew briefing at the Marina with Meteomed weather previews.
11 a.m.: start of the VELA Cup Liguria.
From 7 p.m.: awards ceremony for winners and raffle prizes for all as well.
Followed by the VELA Cup Party with food, drinks and music.
What is the VELA Cup?
Now in its 11th edition, VELA Cup is the series of regattas-sailing events organized by Giornale della Vela to bring all kinds of boats and sailors to the sea. In fact, VELA Cup has always been the series of sailing events with the most participants in Italy, a competition between boats of all sizes, open to everyone. A wonderful opportunity to have fun and spend some time on a boat.
